FOSTER
The Foster Program allows animals to move into homes where they can be cared for until they find their furever home.
How long do most people foster dogs for?
It completely depends on the dog and the situation. Normally the maximum stay in a foster home is 6 months. However, most puppies and some dogs with great photos and stories on the web may stay only a few weeks. Others, recovering from an injury, certain breeds and senior dogs, may stay longer.
What are the downsides of fostering dogs?
Foster dogs have limited known history of fears and triggers. Other pets in the home could be injured or killed by a foster pet. Foster care providers or visitors could be injured by a foster pet. Foster pets could die in foster care or have to return to the shelter to be euthanized. Foster pets may destroy personal items and other household items (pillows, clothing, doors, furniture)
What is the 3-3-3 rule for fostering a dog?
The 3-3-3 rule represents the phases of a rescue dog or common milestones your new dog or puppy will go through 3 days, 3 weeks, 3 months after being adopted from a shelter. Your new dog will have unfamiliar surroundings and go through an adjustment period while settling into his new home.
What is the hardest part of fostering dogs?
At times, it’s incredibly stressful. It requires dedication, hard work, serious time commitments, lots of stain remover, and -- above all -- an understanding of the purpose of the process. If you can’t give your heart to a dog and then let it go when it doesn’t need you anymore, you probably shouldn’t get involved.
RESPONSIBILITIES AND EXPECTATIONS
ABCR will provide all necessary food and medical treatment for all foster dogs while in the care of the foster home. The only time the foster home would be responsible for medical expenses is if the dog needed medical attention as a result of their negligence (ie fight with another animal, struck by vehicle, etc).
ABCR supplies food, bowls, crates, collars, leashes, tags, vaccinations, potty pads, blankets, beds, toys. Any purchases the foster home makes will not be reimbursed by ABCR. Foster homes can purchase supplies on their own. Please review list of recommended approved supplies.
We reserve the right to refuse any applicant for any reason if we feel the needs of the dogs will not be properly met.
Our goal is to place dogs in happy, forever homes where the adopters and dogs are both winners. Without Foster Homes this would not be possible. The application below is our foster application. Once you are approved to foster you are automatically approved to adopt. However, this is not a guarantee that you will be approved to adopt the dog you are fostering. Placing a dog in a furever home is based on the dogs needs for them to live their best life.
ABCR reserves the right to recall and collect a foster back to the rescue at anytime.
Fosters are for 6 month intervals. After six months foster parents are given the option of adopting or surrendering the dog back to ABCR.
